Naples Gated Communities

Gated communities comprise a large portion of the Naples Florida area. Many of the gated communities have a guard at the gate, while others have a mechanical gate. The most expensive housing in Naples is not gated, while several low income neighborhoods are gated.

Naples is very safe and has a very low crime rate. Probably 99% of residents inside gated communities grew up in non-gated neighborhoods not as safe as Naples. So why is so much of the Naples area gated? The purpose of gates:

  • Keeps sightseers from driving through the community.
  • Keeps solicitors out.
  • Adds of level of "Prestige" to the community.
  • Provides a level of "Security."

Gated communities range from thousands of residents, to just a handful. The larger gate communities also have security patrols.

Some of Naples larger gated communities, such a Pelican Marsh, have gated communities within the main gate. Meaning some owners have to pass through the main gate, and then through another gate to their home.  I guess the gated community inside the main gate keeps the criminals that live inside the main gate out. The second gate keeps those residents residing within the main gate from sightseeing through their second gated neighborhood.

For Naples, gated communities started becoming popular in the 1980s, and by 2000 any new community designed to appeal to second home buyers was gated. As well as most no-frills communities. When excluding the Golden Gate Estates area (middle eastern edge of Naples), well over 50% of the Naples land mass is within gates.

Guard at Gate Communities

The map indicates the various location of communities that are gated, and have a guard at the gate. Pelican Marsh with thousands of residents, has three separate gates, all with guards. Some gated communities are very small. The Georgetown subdivision within Pelican Bay for example, has a guard at the gate for only 36 homes. All the upscale developments outside the City of Naples have guards, as well as most golf communities
